Bigfoot is Real, Study Says

Bigfoot believers now have DNA evidence to back up their claims that the legendary ape exists.

A team of scientists in Nacogdoches, Texas, led a five-year investigation testing supposed Sasquatch hair samples in order to sequence the animal's DNA. The results: The scientists mapped three genomes and concluded that Bigfoot is a hybrid between males of an unknown primate species and humans, likely due to cross-breeding with homo sapiens about 15,000 years ago, according to press release.

"Sasquatch nuclear DNA is incredibly novel and not at all what we had expected," lead scientist Dr. Melba S. Ketchum said in the article. "While it has human nuclear DNA within its genome, there are also distinctly non-human, non-archaic hominin, and non-ape sequences. We describe it as a mosaic of human and novel non-human sequence. Further study is needed and is ongoing to better characterize and understand Sasquatch nuclear DNA."

In case this all seems like make-believe, consider the lead scientist's credentials: Ketchum is a veterinarian who has studied genetics for 27 years and helped map the equine genome. And she's far from the first scientist to purport that Bigfoot is a real, living thing.

Earlier this month, a scientist from Idaho announced his plans to raise money to lead a search for Sasquatch? via blimp, according to Time.com.

Idaho State University anthropologist Jeffery Meldrum (also the author of Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science) teamed with William Barnes, a man from Utah to lead the hunt. If they pull it off, the two will operate a remote-controlled blimp equipped with a thermal-imaging camera that can spy any man-apes lumbering below.

They only hitch: They need to raise $300,000 to pull of the stunt.

Over in Russia, another group of scientists claim they are 95 percent sure the Yeti, Sasquatch's cold-weather counterpart, exists.

Last year, about a dozen experts met at a conference in Russia to inspect evidence that the animal was roaming around the Kemerovo region, Time.com tells us. Hair samples, footprints, and what looked like the animal's bed were among the proofs offered.

Nintendo Wii Mini expected to go on sale as soon as today at Walmart Canada

Nintendo Wii Mini

While we can't say that extra-dedicated gamers are tripping over themselves to buy the offline-only Wii Mini, we've got good news for those who weren't looking forward to waiting until December 7th to buy a second system for the kids or parties. Walmart Canada tells us Nintendo's $100 console is cleared to go on sale as of Friday, a week ahead of schedule; our local stores haven't yet received stock, but it's early enough that we're not raising alarm bells. We've asked Nintendo about other retailers and will let you know if additional retail chains get the green (or rather, black and red) light.

Coach: Gavin Cree

Number of athletes: 75

Last season: The Islanders advanced to the state regional tournament, after earning the No. 5 seed out of the district tournament. The team has a 21-9 record.

Strengths: ?We have a really good shooting team, and Joe Rasmussen inside,? said head coach Gavin Cree. ?I think we have a good inside-out game. I think that we have to be more exception-oriented than we were last year. I think last year?s team was a little more athletic, but I like this year?s team?s attention to detail. I think we need to play to that strength and really execute and understand what we?re doing and being committed to be efficient on both ends of the floor.?

Focus: ?We?re always kind of doing the same things, but we?re trying to teach right now,? said Cree. ?We lost quite a few seniors ? we had six seniors graduate last year. They all played a significant role; five of the six played a significant role. We have new guys at practice who are learning different points of emphasis. We?re trying to play fast. I think we?re always trying to do that ? get the ball up the court quick and not allow the defense to set up.?

?We have some threats on offense and working on our defense,? said captain Nick Nordale.

Captains: Seniors Nick Nordale and Joe Rasmussen

?These two guys, it should be noted, are really great, great leaders ? the best leadership that I?ve been a part of here in terms of two captains. I?ve been here for nine years and they?ve been the best,? said the coach.

Game to watch: Bellevue, Mount Si, Bellarmine Prep

?Bellevue is always our big rival. They have a good team this year,? said Cree. ?They have four or five starters back ? we should be very competitive with them. Mount Si is a very good team this year. They have some players coming off injuries from last year, two very good players who didn?t play last year. We?re going to Arizona for a holiday tournament and playing some really tough competition. We?re also playing Bell Prep that?s a top five team, but we?re playing down there. They are going to be a state title contender in 4A. We have a tough schedule.?

Both captains said they are excited for the usual suspects in KingCo, such as Bellevue and Mount Si, as well as the chance to play Bellarmine Prep.

GLHFCasting ? auto insurance-Harlan

auto insurance Harlan IA Every year, more automobiles and drivers are on the highways. With so many vehicles on the road, crashes can happen. If you get in a car accident, the car insurance you own can make a large difference in how much you have to pay. So how can you find out what type of car insurance you need and the quantity you should buy? Your insurance may be able to pay for car crash expenses ranging from hospital bills to legal fees. Making the decision to drive without owning insurance could cause you to repair or replace a stolen or damaged vehicle or pay the cost of any damage for which you might be responsible. Liability: Bodily injury and property damage that you have caused will be covered under liability insurance. It can also cover your legal fees if you are sued. Local laws typically mandate standard amounts, but larger amounts are available and very beneficial. Personal Injury Protection: This type of insurance pays for the medical treatment for you or your passengers, no matter who was at fault in the collision. It is required in some states and optional in others. It may also pay for lost wages, replacement of services and funeral expenses. The minimum amount of personal injury protection is usually set by local government. Medical Payments: This coverage can be purchased in non-no-fault states; it will pay regardless of who may be responsible. This insurance will pay for an insured person?s reasonable and necessary medical or funeral expenses for bodily injury from an accident. Collision: Damages resulting from a car accident will be covered under this type of insurance. Comprehensive: Applies if your vehicle is stolen or damaged by something other than a collision, including fire, wind, hail, flood or vandalism. Uninsured Motorist: Pays for repair and replacement costs when someone with insurance is injured in an accident caused by another person who does not have insurance. Under-Insured Motorist: Just like uninsured coverage, this type of insurance covers you from drivers without enough insurance coverage. Other kinds of coverage, such as car rental, can also be purchased. What you pay for auto insurance varies based on the company and will depend on multiple factors, including: *Your selected coverage *Your vehicle?s make and model * Your driving record * Your age, gender and marital status * Where you live Many drivers think they can get by without car insurance, but it is honestly something you don?t want to live without. Review your needs, do your research , and with the guidance of your insurance agent, make the decision that best suits you.

PFT: Ray Lewis could be back by Week 15

New York Jets v Seattle SeahawksGetty Images

Seattle Seahawks cornerbacks Richard Sherman and Brandon Browner continue to deny that they have ever taken performance-enhancing substances despite facing four-game suspensions for testing positive.

According to Mike Garafolo of the USA Today, Sherman is saying that he unknowingly ingested Adderall prescribed to a teammate according to a person familiar with Sherman?s explanation. Sherman?s agent, Kevin Poston, would not speak on the specifics of the case but when presented with the scenario described Poston said, ?What appears is not always the case. Hopefully, when the facts come out, justice will prevail.?

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network also reported the scenario described by Garafolo.

Sherman, however, is completely denying that?s what took place. In a series of texts Monday night, Sherman disputed the accounts being reported by the USA Today and NFL Network.

?It?s totally false,? Sherman said. ?It will be resolved in time and I have never taken anything.?

Sherman has denied ever taking Adderall since the suspensions were first reported on Sunday.

Browner?s agent, Peter Schaffer, also denied the claims against him client.

?I can tell you that Brandon Browner has no knowledge of how any illegal substance could have gotten into his system,? Schaffer said. ??He takes tremendous care of his body and he is very careful with what he puts into it. We?re exploring all avenues to try and figure out how any substance out of the ordinary would be in his system.?

Per Garafolo, Browner is already in the league?s substance-abuse program following an undisclosed incident while playing for the Denver Broncos in 2005. Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com was on Sports Radio KJR in Seattle Monday morning and relayed Browner?s denial of taking any performance-enhancing substance knowing how frequently he is tested due to being in the substance-abuse program.

?[Browner]?s someone who?s tested regularly; up to three times a week,? La Canfora said. ?So he?s told people, ?look, I knew what I was up against. I don?t even drink a beer because I?m so wary of having a positive for anything.? So he?s been adamant that ?I?m not on anything. I?ve gone out of my way not to put any sort of substance, supplement, or anything other than what you would normally eat and drink.??

Schaffer said they received notice from the league about the positive tests last week. He said normally hearings for these matters are usually scheduled within 20 days of the notice being sent but circumstances could require it to take longer. Schaffer said he wasn?t sure how long it would take for this particular hearing to come about.

?It?s too early to tell what we?re going to need, what witnesses and evidence and experts are going to be required so there is no way to even guess at this point,? he said.

Until those appeals are resolved, both Browner and Sherman are eligible to play for the Seahawks. Head coach Pete Carroll said Monday that he fully expects to have them available for this Sunday?s game against the Chicago Bears.

NFL Football Legend: Joe Namath

When NFL football experts, analysts and even opinionated fans begin making lists of the most beloved players to don a professional team's uniform, no accounting would be complete without football legend Joe Namath.

Joseph William Namath stole the football world's heart at the tender age of 19 when he made his debut as Quarterback for the Alabama Crimson Tide. With his bigger than life coach, and football legend in his own right, Paul "Bear" Bryant demanding perfection from his program at every turn, Joe Willie did not disappoint. Together, in 1964, they hoisted the National Championship trophy over their heads and parted ways the upcoming summer when Joe was drafted to the AFL football team, the New York Jets.

The small town kid from Beaver Creek, Pennsylvania was immediately launched into stardom, making good on his magnetic charm, handsome face, and football prowess. What is now commonplace, and entertaining to fans in every media outlet, was once a novelty idea that turned the television world on its head: Athletes in advertising. Promoting products and endorsing brands with a flash of a smile, and a demeanor that even grandmother would love, "Broadway Joe" was born.

Before the NFL football merger in 1970, Broadway Joe had cemented himself as a household name, proving that football wasn't his only calling. With a cockiness that commanded attention, Mr. Namath took his New York Jets to Superbowl III in 1969 against the Baltimore Colts. The Don Shula led Colts were touted as the best NFL football team of all-time leading up to the showdown, but Joe wasn't swayed by their splendor, aptitude, or incredible history-making lineup. Baltimore was heading into the AFL-NFL clash led by their very own football legend, Johnny Unitas and a defense that could stop a freight train, going downhill at maximum speed. Unmoved by the facts and statistics, in his decisive, steadfast and alluring style of interaction with fans, Joe Namath guaranteed a victory over the highly favored Baltimore Colts just three days before they were to face off at the Orange Bowl Stadium in Miami, Florida.

As the first official championship game to bear the name "Superbowl" the Jets/Colts match-up would go down in history, leaving an impressionable mark on all those who have since gathered around their televisions to root their team to the biggest NFL football game of the year. The Jets hardly murdered the Colts, winning 16-7, but they did intercept the legendary, all-American Johnny Unitas four times, which was unheard of during his time at the helm. Broadway Joe ran off the field in victory, with one hand over his head, waving with his index finger in the air, proclaiming silently to all who watched him swagger off in an excited trot that he and his team were officially number one.

The decisive difference between Namath and Unitas was evident in their appearance, without a single word being uttered by either party. Joe was a long-haired kid who flaunted his flair by wearing a full-length mink coat on the sidelines for warmth. Johnny had a crew cut, and played by all of the rules. You were a fan of one or the other at the time, but typically not both. Especially since their teams were mortal enemies going forward. Just beginning his stark projection into stardom, Joe was an NFL legend every second after the clock ticked to zero in that championship game, even though he had only been in the league for four seasons. He was named Superbowl MVP, and became the first football player ever to win a championship in both the NFL and college.

Before he could even begin training camp exercises in the spring to prepare and defend his promised and delivered title, Joe was wooed into the bright lights, sounds and splendor of Hollywood. Outside of his iconic commercials in the late 1960s, and his acclaimed football career to match, his celebrity status emanated on screen while appearing in movies, popular television programs and while taking the guest chair in the late night hilarity that was The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Even if you had not watched a single football game in your life, you knew who Broadway Joe was, and you loved him. Well, unless you were a Colts fan.

Joe Namath would spend the next seven seasons charming New Yorkers with his low-cut white cleats, fancy footwork and strong arm. He racked up numerous AFL all-star selections, as well as a Pro-bowl and All-pro appearance. He was named to the AFL All-time team, was AFL MVP twice, adding an AFL championship, and a Superbowl championship to his resume. The latter is still the only championship title his beloved New York Jets can claim to date. He left New York to play one last year with the Los Angeles Rams, and had his faithful #12 jersey retired by Gang Green as soon as he did. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985, and still spends his days wondering through the Jets' training camp in the spring. He is engraved in the hearts of so many, thanks to his playing days, and his whimsical smile that could make a blind man blush. Joe Namath's love of the game, dashing personality and exceptional good looks helped turn a divided, part-time entertainment source into a single NFL football league. A league that now represents a full time engagement for men, women and children around the world, and for that we should all be thankful.

Nigeria military base bombing death toll hits 30

KADUNA, Nigeria (AP) ? A hospital official says the death toll in a twin suicide bombing at a church in a major military base in Nigeria has risen to at least 30.

The bombing Sunday hit Jaji, home to Nigeria's Armed Forces Command and Staff College, one of the country's most important military colleges. An official at the base's medical center said at least 45 others had been wounded in the attack.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity as the military hospital bars its staff from speaking to journalists.

On Monday, gunmen attacked a major police station near Nigeria's capital that holds members of the radical Islamist sect Boko, freeing prisoners and killing two police officers. No group has claimed the attacks, which mirrors others carried out by Boko Haram.

Time for a Different BBC Scotland (and STV Too!) - News Scotland

Sunday, 25 November 2012 23:24

By Gerry Hassan, The Scotsman, November 24th 2012

The BBC is in crisis. BBC Scotland faces significant job cuts, a strike ballot of staff, and the prospect of industrial action.

At a UK level, the BBC has hardly been out of the news in the last few weeks. There has been the Jimmy Savile scandal, a substantial payout to Lord McAlpine, and George Entwistle having to resign as Director General.

The BBC?s problems go much deeper than these immediate problems north and south of the border, and touch on what it is and how it sees itself, and crucially how it understands (and misunderstands) the nature of the UK.

The BBC in Scotland ever since it first began broadcasting here has had controversies over limited autonomy, the quality of programmes, and a management which has to face two ways at the same time: to London and Scotland.

In 1968, Alasdair Milne, then Controller of the BBC north of the border renamed the BBC at Queen Margaret Drive, ?BBC Scotland?. He did it, as he reflects in his autobiography, by simply changing the wording on the front of the building. One insider says that ?BBC Scotland is in essence a fiction?, an overstatement, but an observation containing an essential truth about where power ultimately lies.

The BBC?s distinctiveness was meant to be aided by the Broadcasting Council for Scotland set up in 1953, and the subsequent Audience Council, but these have shown themselves barely adequate in the modern age.

The Broadcasting Council worked in an age of Lady Avonside and the Earl of Balfour, but it failed crucially when it was most needed. A key moment for it and the BBC was 1997-98 and the debate to develop a more distinct, autonomous Scottish agenda which centred around the proposals for a ?Scottish Six?, namely the principle of an integrated Scottish news and current affair programme bringing together Scottish, UK and international news under one roof.

There was at this point a conspicuous failure of BBC Scotland leadership, while John Birt, then Director General, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, lobbied hard against what they saw as ?a trojan horse? which they felt would lead to the breakup of the BBC.

Lets look at how BBC Scotland has covered news and current affairs subsequently. First, we got the compromise of ?Newsnight Scotland? as a sop for not having a ?Scottish Six?. Despite the best efforts of many BBC staff it increasingly looks and feels like an anachronism.

Second, current affairs broadcasting in Scotland is predominantly and embarrassingly Westminster dominated. ?The Daily Politics? broadcasts five hours a week ? 4.5 hours of Westminster politics with 30 minutes taken out of the schedule for live coverage of First Minister?s Questions. It is a huge imbalance of resources and reporting; we get masses of Westminster drama and theatre, most of it entertaining, but much of it irrelevant to Scotland.

Third, there is a narrowness in how current affairs is done on the BBC (and STV too). There are no Scottish equivalents of ?BBC Question Time?. Twenty years ago the BBC and STV had a phalanx of public participation programmes such as ?Words with Wark? and ?Scottish Women? which were all axed when the Parliament came about to produce specialist politics programmes.

Where can the Scottish public gather and assess the mood of the nation at critical points such as the al-Megrahi release and controversy? Nowhere on our television schedules on the BBC or STV.

There is a deeper set of issues in this about how the BBC understands the United Kingdom. The BBC is as one observer put it ?the guardian of Britain, never in front of the wave of change, always having to be dragged?. That is true when you think of all the big issues: Scotland, Europe, the hollowing out of our democracy, and the crisis of the British political classes.

The BBC is one of the last pillars of the British establishment ? a liberal one ? but one which is increasingly out of touch with a fragmented, diverse and divided society. It fails Scotland and Wales, but England too, and patronises, belittles and ignores English regions such as the North East.

The BBC national leadership is increasingly part of an old fashioned patrician order and institution which sits uneasily with and has been undermined by marketeering and management consultant logic, which led in John Birt?s time to the rise of what was called ?Birtspeak?, a BBC version of the jargon, buzzwords and processes by which a new centralisation was imposed.

Two sets of changes are required, one British and one Scottish. The BBC needs a new pan-British compact, put into the next Charter Review to reflect the different audiences, regions and nations of the UK. This would recognise life in all its varieties beyond the London and South East, and a politics which wasn?t insular and self-obsessed with what happens in the Westminster village. It would understand that diversity was more than moving some staff north to Salford.

Scotland needs a specific Scottish solution to reflect our unique historical context and modern interests, in short, a completely distinct and autonomous Scottish Broadcasting Corporation run from Pacific Quay. This will require courage, vision and leadership from people, and it will necessitate all of us beginning to ask what do we want from broadcasters and what sort of Scotland do we want them to portray back to us.

This is one of the crucial missing ingredients in all of this, which BBC and STV contribute towards, namely, that Scotland can barely understand and see itself in the narrow, clich?d representations of itself portrayed in TV and radio.

We are a modern nation and society, rich, diverse, complicated, with huge potential and aspirations, as well as challenges, and yet we barely see any of this in the broadcasting media of Scotland.

Thirty five years ago the Royal Commission on Broadcasting savaged what it saw as the stereotypes and hackneyed images of Scotland on TV and radio, the tartan, haggis and shortbread mix, and demanded change. Things have got better in the intervening years, in that some of these old images have been dropped or weakened, while ?the cultural cringe? has dissipated.

Yet Scotland has changed so much in this period, and our broadcast media has not even tried to keep up with or reflect change. Wouldn?t it be something if BBC Scotland and STV began to recognise that things can?t go on as they are, and started to reflect in politics, culture and life the wonderful, creative nation out there? If they don?t these analogue providers will find in an increasing multi-media, digital world that they lose status and influence to new initiatives as people increasingly create content and platforms themselves.

Schapiro stepping down at SEC, Walter to step in

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The head of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Mary Schapiro, will step down next month after a tumultuous four years spent rehabilitating the agency's battered reputation, handing the reins temporarily to a close ally.

SEC Commissioner Elisse Walter, a career regulator who has sided with Schapiro on most of the critical issues before the agency, was named chairman-designate and could serve until December 2013, buying time for President Barack Obama to win Senate approval for a long-term replacement.

Obama plans to nominate someone soon, a White House official said. Walter is among the candidates likely to be considered, as is Treasury official Mary Miller, who spent nearly three decades at T. Rowe Price and has been outspoken about the need to make money markets safer for investors.

The new SEC chair will need to finish Schapiro's task of resurrecting the agency's reputation, which was badly tarnished by the 2007-2009 financial crisis.

The SEC is considering money market reforms, additional market structure safeguards, and still needs to write a number of major rules dictated by the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial reform law, including a final version of the Volcker rule to ban banks from trading for their own accounts.

"Elisse has been viewed as being in tune with Mary Schapiro's agenda," said Barry Barbash, a former director of the SEC's division of investment management, now an asset management lawyer at Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP in Washington. "If the idea is to keep the SEC running the way it's been running with the same policies, Elisse would seem an appropriate choice."

Speculation has swirled for months that Schapiro would leave soon after the November 6 presidential election.

Her departure leaves the commission split 2-2 between Democrats and Republicans, which could make it harder for the commission to come to agreement. Obama could move to appoint a fifth commissioner before naming a new chairman.

When Schapiro took over in 2009, the agency was under heavy fire for regulatory blindspots that critics said helped fuel the crisis. It was also lambasted for failing to catch now-convicted Ponzi schemer Bernard Madoff, whose fraud cost investors an estimated $65 billion.

In addition to shoring up the agency's name, Schapiro had to fight numerous other fires - from the 2010 "flash crash" that sent the Dow Jones industrial average tumbling 700 points within minutes to high-profile court losses.

"We've gotten a lot done, I'm really proud of where the agency is today, so it seemed like a good time," Schapiro said in an interview on Monday after announcing her departure.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Other possible replacements for Schapiro include Sallie Krawcheck, a former top executive at Bank of America and Citigroup, and Richard Ketchum, chairman of FINRA, Wall Street's self-funded regulator. SEC enforcement director Robert Khuzami, a Republican, is considered a long shot.

While Walter is also a possibility, she has already been at the SEC for more than four years and served as acting chairman before Schapiro's confirmation.

In many ways, Walter and Schapiro have been joined at the hip in their career experience and orientations. They both spent years as attorneys at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and at the SEC, with stints in top positions at FINRA.

"She is a strong advocate of disclosure, of regulation and of consumer protection," former SEC Commissioner Edward Fleischman said of Walter.

SCHAPIRO's LEGACY

Schapiro's time at the SEC was marked by some controversy and her departure leaves uncertainty around major initiatives. But former SEC officials said Schapiro helped revive a moribund agency.

"I think she saved the SEC, which was close to extinction when she took over," former SEC Chairman Arthur Levitt told Reuters.

Schapiro said in the interview that steering the agency out of that period in its history was one of the highlights of her tenure there.

She streamlined the SEC enforcement process, hired new types of employees and created a new tips database and a whistleblower office. In the past two years, the agency logged a record number of enforcement actions and brought major financial crisis cases, including a record $550 million settlement in 2010 with Goldman Sachs.

It has also implemented reforms to protect markets against major swings caused by errant technology - as was the case with the flash crash.

"The SEC is stronger, and our financial system is safer and better able to serve the American people - thanks in large part to Mary's hard work," Obama said in a statement.

But the agency has also been bogged down with major rules the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial regulation law required it to write, many of which are still in process.

Business groups have challenged much of the SEC's recent rule-making efforts and won major battles, including convincing a federal appeals court to throw out the agency's "proxy access" rule, which would have empowered shareholders to nominate directors to corporate boards.

Schapiro did not say what she planned to do next.

Cutler returns with roar for Bears

QB throws touchdown pass two weeks after suffering concussion against Texans

Image: Minnesota Vikings v Chicago BearsGetty Images

Jay Cutler shares a laugh with Matt Spaeth as they wait for a touchdown replay call.

updated 5:35 p.m. ET Nov. 25, 2012

CHICAGO - Jay Cutler returned from a concussion to lead Chicago to a win, while the Bears now have to deal with injuries to Devin Hester and a slew of teammates.

Cutler threw for 188 yards and a touchdown after sitting out a game because of a concussion, and the Bears broke it open early for a 28-10 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday in a game that saw Hester, Matt Forte, Charles Tillman and both starting guards sidelined.

Tied with Green Bay for the NFC North lead and just a game ahead of Minnesota (6-5) coming in, the Bears (8-3) grabbed a 25-3 halftime lead with Cutler connecting on just about every pass. The defense held Adrian Peterson in check early on, although he finished with 108 yards rushing.

Chicago also came away with three more takeaways to increase its league-leading total to 30.

The rather easy win came after back-to-back losses to Houston and San Francisco, but came with a heavy price.

Hester was lost early on to a concussion; Forte hobbled off midway through the third quarter with an ankle injury, and coach Lovie Smith said Tillman hurt his ankle.

Guards Lance Louis and Chris Spencer went out with knee injuries in the third quarter, with Louis' injury forcing Chicago to go with Gabe Carimi - who lost the right tackle job to Jonathan Scott.

As for Cutler, he looked sharp after missing Monday's blowout loss at San Francisco.

Back after being knocked out of the Texans game on a helmet-to-helmet hit by Tim Dobbins, he got off to a scorching start and completed 23 of 31 passes with an interception to go with the touchdown.

Brandon Marshall caught 12 passes for 92 yards and became the first Bears receiver since Marty Booker in 2002 to go over 1,000 yards. On defense, Henry Melton set the tone by sacking Christian Ponder on the first play from scrimmage. Nick Roach set up the first touchdown by knocking the ball out of Peterson's hands. Chris Conte set another TD with a 35-yard interception return, and Julius Peppers blocked a field goal.

The league's leading rusher, Peterson tied Robert Smith's club record with a 100-yard performance for the fifth straight game even though he managed just 25 in the first half. He also lost two fumbles.

Ponder wasn't much help, going 22 of 43 with 159 yards and a touchdown along with an interception. His favorite target, Percy Harvin, sat out his second straight game with a sprained left ankle, and the Vikings lost for the third time in four games.

Cutler completed 15 of 17 passes for 117 yards in the first half, and the Bears jumped out a big lead after a shaky start on offense.

Forte fumbled on Chicago's first play from scrimmage, leading to a 40-yard field goal by Blair Walsh - all the scoring the Vikings did in the half.

The Bears quickly turned this one around, starting with Roach's forced fumble. They took over on the Minnesota 34, and Michael Bush ran it in from the 1.

Chris Kluwe then shanked a 22-yard punt, giving Chicago possession near midfield before Robbie Gould kicked a 47-yard field goal. And the Bears stopped the Vikings again early in the second quarter when Peppers knocked down Walsh's 30-yard field goal, the 13th block of his career.

Bush, in for Forte, converted on a fourth-down run to keep a drive going and Antoine Winfield shoved Brandon Marshall to the ground as he attempted to catch a pass in the end zone. Bush then scored from the 1, and holder Adam Podlesh ran in for a 2-point conversion that made it 18-3.

Ponder got picked off by Conte and he returned it 35 yards to the Minnesota 13. That led to a scoring strike from Cutler to a lunging Matt Spaeth on the next play. It might have been more had Kevin Williams not blocked Gould's 39-yard field goal as the half expired.

Freshman QB leads USC against No. 1 Notre Dame

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Not many young quarterbacks would even have the audacity to imagine making their first career starts under the circumstances surrounding Max Wittek at the Coliseum on Saturday night.

The freshman is replacing Matt Barkley, an injured senior who has claimed most of the career passing records at Southern California. He's facing Notre Dame (11-0), a storied football power with a No. 1 ranking and the nation's most feared defense.

The Irish need just one more win to book a spot in the national title game, and the struggling Trojans (7-4) have lost three of four. Yet Wittek also has arguably the best receiving duo in the nation catching his passes and a sold-out stadium firmly at his back.

If the enormity of this occasion is scaring Wittek, the confident 19-year-old with a bigger arm than Barkley hasn't shown it a bit.

"You really can't ask for a better opportunity to show what you've got," Wittek said. "I just want to get that first snap, maybe that first hit, out of the way, and I'll be ready to go."

Although USC has dominated the past decade in this delicious intersectional rivalry, winning nine of 10 and missing a clean sweep by one dropped touchdown pass two years ago, Wittek and the Trojans realize most of the pressure is on the other sideline this time.

The Irish are just one win away from completing a remarkable run to the BCS title game in coach Brian Kelly's third season. With so many pressure-packed wins already behind them this season, the Irish will hit the field in downtown Los Angeles simply trying not to get caught up in the matchup's history ? or the history they'll make with a victory.

"You think about it," Notre Dame safety Zeke Motta said. "In the back of your mind, it's there that if you win this game, you're going to play in the national championship. What more motivation do you need? But I think we want to treat it like any other game. Obviously it's a rivalry game, so we're going to be playing fierce and tough. We're just focused on who we're playing against and sticking it to them."

Notre Dame has done its part to make the schools' 84th meeting appropriately memorable. The Irish headed to the Coliseum with the No. 1 ranking for the sixth time in the schools' shared history, and they're unbeaten when facing USC for the first time since 1993.

USC is headed to a lower-tier bowl game, but could halt its late-season slide from the preseason No. 1 ranking by crushing the Irish's title dreams. USC has stumbled after a 6-1 start to a season of enormous expectations, losing to Arizona, Oregon and UCLA in the previous four weeks.

"This is a game where we can get our respect back and get a good feeling about ourselves," USC safety T.J. McDonald said.

Both teams are made up of teenagers and young adults who can't possibly have the same connection to this rivalry as thousands of alumni, former players or football fans who simply enjoy the college sport's best traditions. The USC coaching staff attempted to remedy some of those educational gaps this week, with coach Lane Kiffin and defensive coordinator Ed Orgeron speaking up in team meetings about the series' meaning and lore.

Kiffin also played Notre Dame's fight song during USC's practices this week, hoping to remind the Trojans of their 31-17 upset win in South Bend last year.

"My dad never beat them, so he definitely has a chip on his shoulder when it comes to this rivalry," said McDonald, whose father, Tim, also was a defensive back at USC. "All of the Trojan family is watching. Everyone wants to see how the Trojans are going to play, how they're going to respond from last week. We've just got to be able to go out there and make a statement."

Everybody on the USC offense knows all about the imposing Irish defense led by linebacker Manti Te'o, which has allowed just 10.1 points per game and eight touchdowns all season. Notre Dame's punishing run defense has been almost impenetrable, but its pass defense has yet to be tested by an offense with USC's talent ? even with a freshman quarterback at the controls.

Wittek has played only sparingly this season, but has known he would be under the spotlight this week since the injured Barkley texted him after last week's loss: "Let's go beat the Irish."

After two full years of practice in Kiffin's offense, Wittek is eager to show the Trojans won't have to keep it simple as they did two years ago, when backup Mitch Mustain filled in for the injured Barkley in Notre Dame's 20-16 win at the Coliseum.

"They're a great defense, obviously one of the top defenses in the NCAA, but every defense does have their soft spots," Wittek said. "Theirs are obviously limited in being such a great defense, but we are looking forward to taking advantage of some of those soft spots."

Wittek's confidence doesn't seem so outlandish given the talent around him: receivers Marqise Lee and Robert Woods along with tailbacks Curtis McNeal and Silas Redd. Wittek's teammates are completely familiar with the quarterback who got about 25 percent of the first-team snaps in practice this year ? and he's superior to the decorated Barkley in at least one area.

"Max throws much harder. It hurts," Lee said with a laugh. "I have faith in Max. I know he can do it. It's about waiting for your time, and his time is here."

If the Trojans can crack Notre Dame's vaunted defense, the Irish offense will be required to produce a big game against USC's struggling defense. USC's last four opponents have combined for 156 points, and Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson is coming off a 346-yard passing performance against Wake Forest ? the seventh-biggest in school history, accomplished in just 2? quarters, no less.

But every number in Notre Dame's favor won't matter when the Trojans go after a historic upset in a rivalry series full of unexpected twists. The Irish understand the perils looming in those 60 minutes before they earn the right to play for another national title.

"It's very exciting," Notre Dame center Braxston Cave said. "This is what guys come to Notre Dame for. We've finally got the program back to where it belongs, and I think guys are really excited about that."

LEAKED! The NWO Internet Takeover AND Kill Switch Agenda! If ...

Hello once again ATS. I've come to borrow yet another chunk of your time. Sometimes I do so a bit frivolously. But, sadly, today that is not the case.
Today I bring you news most troubling and foul....

Mark the above picture into your mind ATS - and mark it well. It is the propaganda presentation for the battleground that may well decide the future of our beloved Internet.

The ITU will facilitate the The World Congress on International Telecommunications or WCIT, a treaty-level conference that addresses the international rules for telecommunications, including international tariffs.] The previous conference to update the International Telecommunication Regulations (ITRs) was held in Melbourne in 1988. The next conference will be held in Dubai in December 2012.

The treaty itself consists of ten articles and 73 reservations from various of the 111 initial signatory countries. It covers both inter-country communications as well as maritime communications, governing privileged and emergency communications, accounting for services, and exceptions for bilaterally agreed communications.

In August 2012, ITU called for a public consultation on a draft document ahead of the conference. The proposal would allow government restriction or blocking of information disseminated via the internet and create a global regime of monitoring internet communications - including the demand that those who send and receive information identify themselves. It would also allow governments to shut down the internet if there is the belief that it may interfere in the internal affairs of other states or that information of a sensitive nature might be shared.[citation needed]
Telecommunications ministers from 193 countries will attend the conference.

What is all the hubbub about? Well the secret is now out...

A document leaked today, dated May 08, 2012, entitled "DRAFT COMPLILATION OF PROPOSALS WITH OPTIONS FOR REVISIONS FOR THE ITRS. This document was created by the International Telecommunication Union. A bit about them:

The International Telecommunication Union, previously the International Telegraph Union, is the specialized agency of the United Nations which is responsible for information and communication technologies. ITU coordinates the shared global use of the radio spectrum, promotes international cooperation in assigning satellite orbits, works to improve telecommunication infrastructure in the developing world and establishes worldwide standards.

ITU also organizes worldwide and regional exhibitions and forums, such as ITU TELECOM WORLD, bringing together representatives of government and the telecommunications and ICT industry to exchange ideas, knowledge and technology. The ITU is active in areas including broadband Internet, latest-generation wireless technologies, aeronautical and maritime navigation, radio astronomy, satellite-based meteorology, convergence in fixed-mobile phone, Internet access, data, voice, TV broadcasting, and next-generation networks.

ITU is based in Geneva, Switzerland, is a member of the United Nations Development Group and its membership includes 193 Member States and around 700 Sector Members and Associates.

From the above linked Wikipedia source

Wikipedia also has the following to say about the mission of The ITU:

The ITU's mission is to enable the growth and sustained development of telecommunications and information networks, and to facilitate universal access so that people everywhere can participate in, and benefit from, the emerging information society and global economy. The ITU assists in mobilizing the technical, financial, and human resources required to make this vision real.

For the last 20 years, ITU has been coordinating efforts of government and industry and private sector in the development of a global broadband multimedia international mobile telecommunication system, known as IMT. Since 2000, the world has seen the introduction of the first family of standards derived from the IMT concept. Since May 2007, there are more than 1 billion IMT-2000 subscribers in the world.[citation needed] IMT-Advanced provides a global platform on which to build the next generations of mobile services - fast data access, unified messaging and broadband multimedia - in the form of exciting new interactive services.
A major priority of the ITU is bridging the so-called "digital divide" by building adequate and safe information and communication infrastructure and developing confidence in the use of cyberspace through enhanced online security.

The ITU also concentrates on strengthening emergency communications for disaster prevention and mitigation, especially in less developed regions.

The ITU has been in existense much longer than has the Internet. In fact it came into being in Paris, France in the year 1865. It later became affiliated with the United Nations, as a specialized agency in 1947.

Of itself the ITU says the following:

Our Vision

Virtually every facet of modern life ? in business, culture or entertainment, at work and at home ? depends on information and communication technologies.

Today, there are billions of mobile phone subscribers, close to five billion people with access to television, and tens of millions of new Internet users every year. Hundreds of millions of people around the world use satellite services ? whether getting directions from a satellite navigation system, checking the weather forecast or watching television from isolated areas. Millions more use video compression every day in mobile phones, music players and cameras.

ITU is at the very heart of the ICT sector, brokering agreement on technologies, services, and allocation of global resources like radio-frequency spectrum and satellite orbital positions, to create a seamless global communications system that?s robust, reliable, and constantly evolving.

The global international telecommunications network is the largest and most sophisticated engineering feat ever created. You use it every time you log on to the web, send an e-mail or SMS, listen to the radio, watch television, order something online, travel by plane or ship ? and of course every time you use a mobile phone, smartphone or tablet computer.

Source

They also go on to proudly state that they are responsible for every phone call, coordinating all the worlds satellites, and especially important: making the Internet possible.

Their "About" page sums it up nicely:

Overview

ITU (International Telecommunication Union) is the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies ? ICTs.

We allocate global radio spectrum and satellite orbits, develop the technical standards that ensure networks and technologies seamlessly interconnect, and strive to improve access to ICTs to underserved communities worldwide.

my house: Death and dying: End of Life Exit strategies

As a Humanist/Rationalist, I have always had an interest in the humanist position on end of life exit strategies.

Quite simply, this is about a making a conscious, rational decision that if diagnosed with a terminal disease or for any other reason deciding that quality of life is unacceptable, having control over the end of the life process, ensuring that the end of life happens in a quick, painless manner, rather than suffering a lingering death as the victim of a society that is dominated by relgious beliefs that prevent humans receving the same level of terminal care as a family pet.

Disclaimer: I hope to live a long and satisfying life and have no suicidal ambitions at present. Unfortunately it is the stigma of discussing end of life? that forces me to make this disclaimer as otherwise many of my friends would believe falsely that I am contemplating suicide.

I have no fear of death. Death is nothingness as the brain ceases to function. From a personal perspective, death is no different from a general anaesthetic except that you don't wake up. I remember thinking about this the last time I underwent a GA. As I was wheeled into to the prep room and the the anaesthetic was connected to the veins in my wrist, I was thinking that what I was about to experience would be identical to the moment of death in a controlled environment. That was the last thought I had before I woke up....

However, I do have a natural and understandable fear of dying. Dying is about pain and even more about loss of control as you become weaker and lose control of your own destiny. My greatest fear would be coming semi-vegatitive -suffering but unable to articulate my desire for the pain and humiliation to end.

I feel great comfort in knowing that if I am every confronted with a terminal illness that I will be able to be in control of my own destiny to the end. I am a huge support of Exit International - http://www.exitinternational.net/ a voluntary euthanasia organisation started by an Australian Doctor who actually created a patient controlled euthanasia machine more than a decade ago, but was banned from using it by the Australian Courts.

At the moment, I have two preferred strategies for end of life management. The first is self-management through use of a Helium bag (or a Helium tent for terminally ill couples). The great thing about Helium is that it doesn't produce any subjective signs of approaching hypoxia such as shortness of breath. There is no discomfort at all and unconciousness? and then death happens gradually and painlessly, within minutes as the helium replaces oxygen. However, it is important to obtain the right equipment as unfornately there are many examples of this not working when a heliumu/oxygen mix is unintentionally used instead of pure Helium. See: http://suicideproject.org/2011/08/failed-helium-exit-bag-attempt

This is wonderful blog with people trying to help each other achieve a painless death without any questioning of their intentions.

My second recommended strategy is Dignitas, the Swiss assisted suicide organisaton. http://www.dignitas.ch/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=20&lang=en

Dignitas provide a dying with dignity service for those with confirmed terminal illnesses. However, for most of my friends, using Dignitas would mean ending your life a long way from your family and friends, unless you could convince them to accompany you to Switzerland. I've read many wonderful stories from people arriving at Dignitas who have used their savings to pay for family and friends to accompany them to Switzlerland and have have had a wonderful final night out at a nice restaurant before ending their lives.

My strong support for a structued and and humanist end of life strategy is driven by three things. The first is my humanist worldview. Without the fantasy of religion, we can make sensible moral and ethical decisions that are in the best interests of ourselves. Secondly, I have a clear memory of the suicide of my sister, who didn't have the knowledge or support to have a painless end of life. She took rat poison and did not die painlessly. The police who recovered her body initially thought that she was murdered due to the amount of bruises on her body. The brusies were in fact caused by the reaction of the rat poison on her body.

Thirdly, I have fond recollections of my Father, who was a very caring, humanist, atheist Doctor. He had similar principles to myself in respect of end of life care for his patients. I remember one Saturday that I was was with him as he did his hospital round. He had to visit "Mr Smith", who who was an extreme diabetic with a terminal illness. All Mr Smith had wanted was was an ice-cream and was not allowed was not allowed this due to his illness. My dad bought Mr Smith an ice cream and Mr Smith passed away peacefully soon after.

I hope to die a natural death, but it is very comforting to know that if I am am ever diagnosed with a terminal illness that I will be in control of my destiny.

Can Shellfish Adapt to More Acidic Water?

November 23, 2012 from KQED

Scientists say oceans are becoming more acidic as they absorb the carbon dioxide added to the air through the burning of fossil fuels. That can be bad news for oysters, mussels and others animals that are key to the seafood industry and to the marine food web. Scientists are using the unique ocean conditions off the California coast to monitor developments.

Questions and answers on US sanctions of Myanmar

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) ? The United States is unwinding two decades of sanctions against Myanmar, as the country's reformist leadership oversees rapid-fire economic and political change. President Barack Obama's visit this week, the first by a serving U.S. president, is a sign of how far relations have come. But Washington continues to take a calibrated approach to easing sanctions, keen to retain leverage should Myanmar's reform momentum stall.

Here's a look at key elements of U.S. sanctions against Myanmar.

Why did the U.S. sanction Myanmar in the first place?

? Washington first enacted sanctions in September 1988, the month after Myanmar's military junta cracked down on peaceful protests, killing thousands. The U.S. responded to deepening human rights violations and brutal suppression of the democratic opposition by tightening sanctions.

Why has the U.S. eased sanctions?

? U.S. policy began to change after Myanmar's president, Thein Sein, took office in March 2011. As the new government released political prisoners, signed cease-fires with ethnic rebels, opened the economy and held elections that saw opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi take a seat in Parliament, the U.S. normalized diplomatic relations and suspended most major sanctions.

What did the U.S. sanction and which sanctions are still in force?

? Washington banned new investment, financial services, multilateral assistance, and imports. It also barred officials from getting U.S. visas and forbade deals with "crony" businessmen linked to the old regime. Restrictions on most new investment, financial services, multilateral assistance, and most imports from Myanmar have been suspended. The biggest remaining block is the list of "specially designated nationals" and companies that U.S. firms are barred from doing business with because of their alleged links to oppression and corrupt practices.

Why hasn't Washington simply done away with sanctions?

? Washington has taken a carrot and stick approach to retain leverage and reinforce good business practices. Also, they're technically hard to undo. Sanctions are governed by six federal laws and a series of executive orders, often with overlapping provisions. There are also functional bans which require specific benchmarks to be met before certain strictures are eased such as ending the use of child soldiers before arms sales are allowed.

Did sanctions work?

? The jury is out. Advocates point to change in Myanmar as evidence that sanctions encouraged reform. But a large chorus of critics says domestic factors rather than sanctions ? which had little effect for two decades ? are the real reason for Myanmar's spring. Critics also say sanctions have been too blunt, hurting the corrupt elite less than the common man.

Nintendo: Wii U Starts to Make Profit Once the First Game Gets Sold ...

While Nintendo sells Wii U video game consoles at a loss, that loss is not really significant. According to the president of Nintendo of America, the company starts to make profit on the console once the first game title for that very Wii U is bought.

?The [video game console] business model does not change dramatically, in that as soon as we get the consumer to buy one piece of software, then that entire transaction becomes profit positive,? said Reggie Fils-Aime, the president of Nintendo of America, in an interview with MercuryNews web-site.

?

It is unclear how much money Nintendo losses on every Wii U and how much it makes on video games for the platform. What is obvious is that Nintendo Wii U is very close to break-even point and unlike other makers of consoles, who sell their hardware at a loss, Nintendo will hardly make a significant loss by selling next-gen hardware in the first months of sales.

Nintendo expects to sell around 5.5 million Wii U game consoles as well as 24 million of video games for Wii U worldwide by March 31, 2013, the company revealed in its financial release recently. It is noteworthy that by the same date the firm plans to sell another five million of its previous-generation Wii game systems. By contrast, Nintendo expected to sell 12 million Wii game systems in the second half of its fiscal 2011 (October, 2011 ? March 31, 2012), which means that at present Nintendo is either very conservative about Wii U success, has production issues with its next-gen console or plans to intentionally limit the amount of consoles it will sell to?control losses.

Nintendo Wii U is based on a custom multi-core IBM Power microprocessor equipped with 1GB of system memory as well as a modern custom AMD Radeon HD graphics processing unit with high-definition graphics and video support that is equipped with 1GB of graphics memory. The consoles come with 32GB or 8GB of NAND flash storage and an optical drive to read custom discs.

The main feature of the game console is its unique Wii U GamePad controller with 6.2" touch-screen that also features an accelerometer and a gyroscope, a rumble feature, an inward-facing camera, a microphone and speakers that can be used to play both classic Gamecube/Wii games as well as specially designed titles that take advantage of the screen. Each Wii U console will be partnered with a new controller and can also use up to four additional Wii Remote or Wii Remote Plus controllers. The system is also backward compatible and can play all Wii games and use all Wii accessories.

Nintendo Wii U console landed in the U.S. on November 18, then it will launch in Europe on November 30, then in Japan on December 8, 2012. In the U.S., the basic bundle costs $299, the premium bundle is available for $349. In Europe, the basic white version will be sold for ?299/?249, while the deluxe black will carry ?349/?299 price-tag. In Japan, the white and black Wii U will cost ?26250 and ?31500, respectively.
